Bruce Harding Tichenor, born November 21, 1942 in St. Louis, MO, the younger of two brothers of Dr. Robert W. and Letitia Youngman Tichenor, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2017 in Concord, CA. He is survived by his wife Jan, stepdaughters Tina & Tanya, son-in-laws Rob & Chad, niece and nephew Virginia & Andrew, and grandsons Christopher, Ethan, Miles, & Chase.
Raised in St. Louis, MO, he graduated from Country Day School in 1960 and St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 1969. With his pharmacy degree in hand, Bruce moved to Carmel, CA and started his 22-year career with Long’s Drugs as a pharmacist. After various positions within Long’s, Bruce settled into a Pharmacy Manager role at the Berryessa store in San Jose.
It was there that he met the love of his life, Jan. They married in 1991. Just one year later, they left their pharmacy careers behind and with blind faith, passion, and a bit of naiveté, they purchased Story Winery in Plymouth, CA to pursue a life as winery owners. He was an early board member of ZAP (Zinfandel Advocates and Producers) as well as a multi-term board member of the Amador Vintner’s Association where he tirelessly championed the Zinfandel varietal and helped bring it back to prominence in the 1990’s. After much advice and tutelage from his fellow winemakers, Bruce made a name for himself creating big, bold Zinfandels. Surrounded by the love of his life and his passion for wine, Bruce was at his happiest in the vineyards or the cellar enjoying wine with family, friends, and colleagues.
After 18 years of running the winery, Bruce was forced to retire due to failing health and finally succumbed to his illness surrounded by family. A Celebration of Life will be held on June 17th @ 11AM at Story Winery, Plymouth, CA.
