Upcoming Events (details below)
Valentine Special - month of February
Futures Tasting - month of February
Wedding & Events Open House - Fri. & Sat. Feb 22 & 23
Behind the Cellar Door - March 2 & 3
Dear Friends,
The results from the 2019 SF Chronicle Wine Competition are in! We scored big in the largest American wine competition. Both the 2016 Alitia and 2016 Picnic Hill Zinfandels were awarded Gold Medals. And our 2017 Carneros Chardonnay received a Double Gold Medal just missing out on another Best in Class! The rest of wines entered took silver. Nice to see all the hard work and long hours paying off. Now it's time to start drinking these award winning wines.
Recently a great group of dedicated and loyal friends helped bottle our premium reds from the 2017 vintage including Quartz, Alita, and Picnic Hill Zinfandels, as well as our Syrah. We also bottled our brand new 2018 Estate Rose. Wait till you get a taste of this Provencaux style Rose - coming this spring!
While we toast the newest wines in the bottle, it's time to get our shears and loppers out and start pruning the vines for the 2019 vintage. The ground cover is appearing, even sprouting, through the recent snow we've had over the past week or so. Watch Facebook for some great photos! Soon the vines will start waking up and we start thinking about this year's vintage!
If you purchased Futures, you're probably wondering when we're going to celebrate with our Futures parties. Mark your calendars - March 23 & 30 and April 6 & 13. An official invitation is coming to Futures buyers and wine club members. Be sure to make reservations early! Call the tasting room anytime during normal business hours or email Susie today.
Come see the start of spring in the Amador Foothills. Daffodils are just starting to bloom and you can catch a glimpse of newborn lambs in the nearby pastures. Kick off the 2019 growing season in our Tasting Room. We are so proud of our people, our vineyards, and our wine.

January Newsletter

UPCOMING EVENTS - Details below
Month of January - End of Vintage Sale
Futures Tasting - Starting Sat. Jan. 12
Wedding & Events Open House - Sat. Jan. 26
Dear Friends,
As we write this month's newsletter, it's raining. And, thankfully, there's more rain in the forecast. Before this round of storms, the rainfall gauge was only ~50% of normal. It looks like Mother Nature is ready to move us closer to 100% of normal.
In the cellar, the rest of our 2017 vintage will be bottled in early February. We are busy tasting through barrels and making final adjustments in preparation for bottling. While most of the work has been done in the barrel, it takes a little 'fairy dust' and some chemistry to make sure the wines will safely age in the bottles for years, if not decades, to come.
In order to make room for our newly-bottled wine, we need to clear some space. We decided what better way than to offer an 'End of Vintage' sale on our popular 2015 Syrah and 2014 Alitia Zinfandel. Purchase six bottles of 2015 Syrah for only $23 a bottle or 2014 Alitia for $21 a bottle. This special pricing is available in our tasting as well as online. Can't make it to the winery? We can ship it to you. See details below. Both of these wines are tasting great and ready to open now!
Our Wine Club is getting upgraded! The launch of our new website now allows our wine club members to manage their memberships online. You can now update or change your credit cards on file, add or change shipping addresses, or simply reorder a shipment from the comfort of your computer or smartphone. We also offer a new tier: 3 and 6-bottle shipments. More information is forthcoming in a separate mailing to our current wine club members, so wine club members - watch your mailboxes. Not a wine club member yet? It's easy to sign up. Just visit our website.
The other big announcement this month is the start of our 2018 Futures program! In case you're unfamiliar with our Futures program, you have the opportunity to purchase several of our premium 2018 wines ahead of time for 55-60% off retail prices. Varietals offered are Zinfandel, Syrah, Chardonnay, and new for this year, Barbera. Ask the tasting room staff for a private barrel tasting in the cellar straight from the barrel. Bring your family and friends for this unique and rare experience. There's no better way to spend a cold winter day than tasting wine from a barrel in the winery.
Did someone you know get engaged over the holidays? Or is a couple looking for a spectacular background for a photo shoot? We boast that we have one of the most ideal venues for events and photography - and everyone agrees. See details below regarding our facilities and open house dates.
It may be raining, but our tasting room is always open. Please join us in our warm and cozy cabin and watch the beauty of Mother Nature at work. We look forward to seeing you soon!

End of Vintage Sale - Month of January
While supplies last, we're featuring two of our most popular wines at a significant discount. 2014 Alitia Zinfandel is priced at just $21/bottle (retails for $32) and our 2015 Bailey Vineyard Syrah is just $23/bottle (retails for $36) in six bottle sets. Wine can be purchased in the tasting room, online, or simply give us a call or email. Hurry, supply is limited!
Futures Tasting & Purchases
We've been offering Futures for several decades, and our friends love the idea of getting in on an incredibly great deal. The program is simple. First, taste through 5 different wines straight from the barrel being offered for futures (Chardonnay, Alitia and Quartz Zinfandel, Barbera, or Syrah). Purchase your case that day at the absolute lowest we ever sell our wine. Soon after the wine is bottled, we invite you back for a Futures Pick Up party (food, drink, and music) where we hand you your case before it's released to public. When you come back to the winery and pick up your case, we also hand you a 13th bottle for picking it up. Barrel tasting is available anytime, just ask one of our helpful staff members for a private tasting in the cellar.
Wedding & Events Open House - Sat. Jan. 26 11am to 2pm
Our beautiful picnic grounds and breath-taking scenery make for a perfect event or photography venue. On the 26th, our Event Manager, Susie, is available to tour anyone who's looking to book an event or arrange a photo shoot around the vineyards or picnic grounds. We believe our view is maybe the best in the Amador wine country. Hard to argue there's any better...

Looking out at our vineyards, it’s a beautiful reminder that some of these vines are more than a hundred years old. There’ve been through some tough years, like 1990 when more than a foot of snow covered the ground and the ground froze. Yet the stock was resilient and survived. Today the roots work continuously to ensure the new growth in spring will produce a spectacular bounty.

Our passion for making exceptional wine and sharing it with our friends is what we celebrate this season. Thank you for taking another trip around the sun with us. We look forward to 2019, and once again toasting the wonder of Mother Nature and her beautiful work in our vineyards!

November Newsletter

Month of November - Carneros Chardonnay & Creekside Zinfandel Sale
Winemakers Dinner at Imperial Hotel - Nov. 16
Thanksgiving Day Thurs. Nov. 22 - closed
Black Friday Sale - Nov. 23
FREE Shipping Nov. 23 thru Dec. 31
Dear Friends,
November is a month of patience for winemakers. Harvest is behind us and we eagerly await the end of malolactic fermentation. Why? So we can go on vacation! This is also the time when we realize the 2017 wines still in the barrel need racking. So while we wait, we empty all the barrels, give them a quick rinse, and put the wine back in (but not before a thorough taste). The Picnic Hill, Alitia, and Quartz Zinfandels along with the Syrah are still in barrel and will be bottled in February. Based on our early results, it's shaping up to be a stellar production. Winemaker Thomas Allan says, "The flavor is there. The balance is there." Sorry, that's all we can say - for now.
Meanwhile, we've already begun the 2019 vintage by discing the vineyard and planting winter cover crops. The nutrients provided by the barley, vetch, fava beans, sweat peas, rye and clover will become next year's fertilizer when it's plowed under in the spring. Below ground, the vines are hard at work sucking up nutrients into its hardwood for next year's explosive growth in spring. Soon the temperatures will drop precipitously, the leaves will fall and the vines will shut down for the winter.
Do your Thanksgiving holiday plans include a large gathering of family and friends? Or are you traveling to someone else's home for the feast and want to bring an impressive gift? During November, we're featuring our 2016 Carneros Chardonnay for just $25/bottle and our 2015 Creekside Zinfandel for just $22/bottle. Buy a couple of each and pair with any Autumn-time menu. Don't miss our Black Friday sale, right after Thanksgiving. Details below.
If you belong to our Wine Club, your next shipment will arrive in early December. Stay tuned - some exciting news is coming next month regarding Club benefits. Please contact us if you'd like to arrange for the pickup of your wine at our Tasting Room.
We look forward to your visit, and wish you a generous portion of turkey, dressing and pumpkin pie at your holiday table.

October Newsletter

Details below
Month of Oct. - End of Vintage Chardonnay Sale & Creekside Zinfandel Sale
Friday Oct. 26 - Nevada Day
Friday Nov. 16 - Imperial Hotel Winemakers Dinner
Hello Friends,

October usually signals the completion of harvest & crush for us. Harvest was a little later this year by about 2 weeks, which helps explain why this newsletter is so late! Our Carneros Chardonnay was the last varietal harvested (on 10/5/18) and will have finished fermenting in both stainless and barrel when you read this. The first grapes (Zinfandel-Quartz) came in on 9/14. Over those 21 days of harvest, we crushed 8 different varieties, including two new ones - Grenache and Petite Sirah. You'll learn more about those new varietals in coming newsletters.
We recently moved all the new wine to barrels to start the 'second' fermentation. While in the barrels, the wine goes through malolactic fermentation. It's a process that takes tart-tasting malic acid and transitions it to softer lactic acid. It's what gives wine that smooth, velvety mouth-feel. Once the 'ML' fermentation is done, we'll put the wine to sleep for the winter and allow the winemakers to take some much needed time off.
Story's long-time winemaker, Brian Reid, moved back to his hometown of Chico before harvest in order to assist family members. Brian was a great partner on our winemaking team, tirelessly overseeing production to ensure solid wines year over year for our customers. Also, Brian enjoyed working the tasting room, and always entertained our guests with great stories. Brian was fun, a very hard worker, and always had Bosco, his Boxer, by his side. We miss them both, and wish them the best.
Remember that some of the most beautiful scenery in the Sierra foothills is on display now. Our gnarly, old-growth vines with gold and red leaves are a perfect backdrop to a wonderful afternoon of great weather and, even better, a lovely glass of wine. Please join us.

September Newsletter

Details below
"White After Labor Day!" Sale - Month of September
2018 Big Crush Harvest Festival - Oct. 5th - 7th
Hello Friends,
We're in the home stretch. Consistent with other Northern California wineries, harvest is delayed this year. Mostly thanks to late Spring weather that included heavy rain and hail. The delay means more hang time for our fruit (that's good!) and some slightly erratic growth. We've seen a few unusually large clusters, weighing as much as three pounds or more! Cross your fingers the current mild weather continues, and allows us to harvest without blistering hot temps.
Join us in welcoming our newest member to the Story Winery team, Thomas Allan! He's assuming the position of Cellar Master helping Rob with winemaking duties. He started right before harvest bringing a deep knowledge of the terroir of the area and is an accomplished winemaker in his own right with his own label - Fate. Thomas has worked at several well-known Shenandoah Valley establishments such as Taste Restaurant as their sommelier and recently Bray Vineyards. Welcome to the family, Thomas!
Have you been to the grounds recently and seen the thick canopies of the vines? They've been especially healthy this year, providing a wonderful vista for visitors and lots of energy for the grapes. You can barely see through to the end of some rows due to the thick growth. All that growth led to ideal chemistry in the grapes this year. We were fortunate to pick right at the peak of maturity with great acid and sugar combinations. Now it's up to the winemaking team to finish things off right!
Some say it's a fashion faux pas to wear white after Labor Day. We're snubbing the fashion world and bringing you Story's highly-awarded white wine at a significant discount after Labor Day. Announcing our first ever "White After Labor Day Sale!" It's a rare chance to stock up on 2016 Carneros Chardonnay, in preparation for upcoming holidays. See details below.
We have a number of events we're participating in this Fall season, including the Big Crush. At this annual harvest celebration, Story will feature live music, pulled-pork sliders and a special pricing on our 2015 Creekside Zin (more details below). But pick any day to visit and it's a special day this time of year. Striking colors, mild temperatures and the amazing Autumn smells of leaves, apples, and pumpkins. Don't miss out!

August Newsletter

Details below
Zin Pack Sale - Month of August
Taste of Amador - Aug. 18
Preston Castle Wine Tasting & Tour - Aug. 25
Summer Concert Series - Aug. 25
Hello Friends,
August is beginning with great growing conditions. Temperatures during the day are in the mid 90's, evenings down in the low 60's. This 30-degree temperature shift is just what the vines need for ideal growing conditions. Veraison is almost complete, setting the stage for a slightly later than normal harvest in mid to late September.
Growth on the vines is a bit inconsistent due to cold wet weather in May. The ground stayed cold much longer than usual leading to a late bloom and fruit set. During this time we got some additional rain and even hail. Some vineyard blocks responded with heavy clusters, while others have slightly lighter clusters. With that said, we should end up with normal tonnage this year!
We just finished bottling a good portion of the 2017 vintage. Sneak peek - we are very happy with each of the wines! Once again, we think our Zinfandels are superb and the Italian varietals astounding. And, our Carneros Chardonnay is off the charts. We'll let them all rest in the bottle for 6-12 months except for the Chardonnay, which will be released during the Holidays.
You may have missed our newsletter over the last couple of months. We had an exceptionally busy June and July. Between cellar duties, tilling the vineyards, and an active schedule of youth sporting events, we just had to prioritize. The newsletter is our favorite way to stay in touch with Story friends, and we make every effort to keep it on schedule. Thanks for your patience. We're also happy to report the matriarch or our wine family, Jan Tichenor, is around a lot more these days. You'll find her in the tasting room and walking the grounds, warmly welcoming our guests.
This time of the year, we like to do a wrap-up of the current wine competition awards. We received some very impressive ribbons and honors from across the state, including Best of Class (Sangiovese, Primtivo Amado Co. Fair), Best Italian Wine (Primitivo, Amador Co. fair) and a few Double Golds (Barbera & Picnic Hill, El Dorado Co. Fair). All in all 9 Golds, 18 Silvers, and 5 bronze medals from just 4 competitions: San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, Orange County Wine Society Competition, El Dorado and Amador County Fairs.
Finally, plan to join us at the end of the month for our August concert series with Mike & Bobby ROCK (details below). Please stop in our tasting room, and take time to enjoy the spectacular grounds. Our vineyards are full of vivid color as we prepare for the upcoming harvest season!
