Hello Friends,

October usually signals the completion of harvest & crush for us. Harvest was a little later this year by about 2 weeks, which helps explain why this newsletter is so late! Our Carneros Chardonnay was the last varietal harvested (on 10/5/18) and will have finished fermenting in both stainless and barrel when you read this. The first grapes (Zinfandel-Quartz) came in on 9/14. Over those 21 days of harvest, we crushed 8 different varieties, including two new ones - Grenache and Petite Sirah. You'll learn more about those new varietals in coming newsletters.
We recently moved all the new wine to barrels to start the 'second' fermentation. While in the barrels, the wine goes through malolactic fermentation. It's a process that takes tart-tasting malic acid and transitions it to softer lactic acid. It's what gives wine that smooth, velvety mouth-feel. Once the 'ML' fermentation is done, we'll put the wine to sleep for the winter and allow the winemakers to take some much needed time off.
Story's long-time winemaker, Brian Reid, moved back to his hometown of Chico before harvest in order to assist family members. Brian was a great partner on our winemaking team, tirelessly overseeing production to ensure solid wines year over year for our customers. Also, Brian enjoyed working the tasting room, and always entertained our guests with great stories. Brian was fun, a very hard worker, and always had Bosco, his Boxer, by his side. We miss them both, and wish them the best.
Remember that some of the most beautiful scenery in the Sierra foothills is on display now. Our gnarly, old-growth vines with gold and red leaves are a perfect backdrop to a wonderful afternoon of great weather and, even better, a lovely glass of wine. Please join us.
